The Golden Globes have set the standard for red carpets during the 2024 awards season

Updated: Feb 27

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Nope, not Christmas, not even the Met Gala, it's awards season. For the next two months we get red carpet after red carpet for the biggest award shows in music, film and entertainment. This means all our favourite celebs get dozens of chances to show up and show us one of the best red carpet looks we have ever seen. There are iconic fashion moments just waiting to happen and it all starts with the Golden Globes - this year held on January 7th - where celebrities lay out the standards and expectations for the next few months. The Globes have previously been attended by every A-lister you can imagine, from Beyonce and Angelina Jolie, to Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker. At this years red carpet, we saw some emerging trends that we can expect to see at celebrity events this year, including a LOT of Schiaparelli, lace details, asymmetrical features on gowns, peplum and several others.

In this post, let's talk about who's looks made the best dressed list, those that should have just stayed at home, and the few who I'm actually unsure about. As always, we'll finish off by choosing at top 3 and a worst 3 from the night, but for now, let's look at some of the best dressed.

Best dressed

1/22

Rosamund Pike in Dior Couture

This look has me in an absolute chokehold Rosamund has been in the industry for years, but I think we're about to see her dominate the fashion industry during this awards season. This look is elegant, sexy, refined and intriguing. An iconic silhouette with layers of lace, creating a sheer look that is just perfect when paired with this STUNNING headpiece.

2/22

Carey Mulligan in Schiaparelli

This piece is a recreation of a 1949 dress made by Elsa Schiaparelli herself, which is a gorgeous shoulder-less black gown, gathered in a vertical line down the front of the centre of the dress. The neckline features a display of white and silver crystals that are sewn into a separate portion of the dress, cut off asymmetrically by the black body of the gown.

3/22

Dua Lipa in Schiaparelli

Once again, Schiaparelli. I think we have seen to much from this house on the red carpet recently, to the point where it has become overdone and predictable. However, this gown perfectly represents all of the signatures of Schiaparelli, without feeling to obvious or over the top, as this look is still just a simple beautiful dress. Dua's striking red hair and Tiffany jewellery make for the perfect bombshell red carpet look.

4/22

Hunter Schafer in Prada

If you don't like this look, leave this page and go watch a video of Hunter at the red carpet, this way the wind creates a fantasy by blowing this dress to the side is something magnificent. It isn't everyday that we get a genuinely unique and also beautiful look from Prada, but this one will be remember for a long time.

5/22

Greta Lee in Loewe

This Loewe piece is simply pretty in the front, but in the back it's party central (with a knotted fabric falling over an open back from the neckline). Not only was Greta's dress a brilliant statement, her hair became the talk of the internet. This old Hollywood wavy bob has become the signature look of Greta, and perhaps it will take over this yer as one of the biggest trends for celebs and everyone else.

6/22

Natalie Portman in Dior Couture

Natalie is definitely a Dior girly, this dress truly solidifies her relationship with the brand. This is a perfect Dior piece, from the beautiful neckline and fitted bodice to the gorgeous large skirt, all adorned with tiny flowers that create a beautiful floral landscape.

7/22

Brie Larson in Prada

This custom dress is the perfect answer to the question: how do you do red carpet, but understated/simple? The shade of lilac is incredibly flattering, the shape of the dress is just immaculate and the entire look pulls you into a Prada fantasy I didn't know was possible.

8/22

Elizabeth Debicki in Dior

I half expected Elizabeth to reference a 2000's Diana look, to symbolise her role in the Crown and pay respect before she moves on to other ventures. However, this Dior piece was perfect for the occasion. It is youthful yet elegant and classy, it is modest yet shouting 'I am fabulous'. Not to mention, she quite literally looks like an award statue.

9/22

Gillian Anderson in Gabriela Hearst

Perfect. Nothing more to say.

10/22

Elizabeth Banks in custom Dolce and Gabbana

This look was quite the moment on the carpet, Elizabeth looks fierce like a 90's supermodel, simple and understated. Yet, the corseted bodice, sleek black fabric and dazzling sparkles create a masterpiece.

11/22

Michelle Yeoh in Bottega Veneta

This shade of red looking absolutely radiant on Michelle Yeoh, who has become a firm favourite of Bottega. The simple dress is perfectly chic, with a flowering detail that stands out at the shoulder-less neckline.

12/22

Billie Eilish in Willy Chavarria

Billie has demonstrated she can do uber-glamorous, form fitting style but will never fully give up on the extreme, oversized fits. This look is fun, playing into the schoolboy kind of vibe, but it's the hair that really tops off the look for me.

13/22

Heidi Klum in Sophie Couture

It's rare to see a dress with this much volume on the red carpet that doesn't look cheap or tacky, but this one really steals the show. The vibrant red is the perfect colour for Heidi and creates a fantastic moment on the carpet.

14/22

Da'Vine Joy Randolph in custom Rodarte

Rodarte is very much hit or miss, but this piece is a bombshell HIT. With its shell cup bustier and peplum skirt leading into a gown that completely hits the floor, this piece creates a little mermaid fantasy that I am 100% here for.

15/22

Ariana Greenblatt in Saint Laurent

Saint Laurent has always been that girl when it comes to tailoring - mostly for men - but to see such a striking look on a woman is long overdue. Hopefully this is the start of a trend that sees female celebrities really trying to tackle tailoring.

16/22

Angela Bassett in custom Dolce

This dress is simple, elegant and sexy. The sleeves aren't a perfect fit but this velvet look is the perfect fit for a Hollywood awards show.

17/22

Andra Day in Georges Chakra couture

This look was an absolute shock. It felt reminiscent of the glamorous goth aesthetic that Gigi Hadid channeled at the 2023 Met Gala (made by Givenchy). The sheer element mixed with the floral pieces comes together to create a jaw-dropping look.

18/22

Matt Bomer in custom Brioni

Men, if you are going to do a simple suit - and not have the confidence to fully 'Timothee Chalamet' it, with a backless or shirtless suit - this is how you do it. There is some fun in the colouring, some intrigue in the texture from the shirt and an intentional tailoring to ensure that it actually fits.

19/22

Lenny Kravitz in Alexander McQueen

Lenny has and always will be an icon. This McQueen ensemble is a beautiful fit, it's simple but slightly out there, with oblique cutouts and large pants, almost flared.

20/22

Rachel Smith in Marchesa Notte

One of the unsung heroes of the night - fashion wise. The shape and fit of this gown is immaculate, and the unique cut of the neckline (also shoulder-less) makes it more than just a floral dress. What's more, the print is truly stunning and fitting for such a youthful, vibrant model.

21/22

Hannah Waddingham in Dolce

If I had to add another look to my top 3 of the night, it would be this one. The lace and sheer details are so gorgeous, Hannah looks powerful and confident, this entire look is magnificent.

22/22

Tyler James Williams in Dolce

Of all the men at this event, Tyler was the best dressed. The fit of the suit, the pinstripe pattern and the flower detail all come together to create a very subtle yet elegant look.

Although there were some incredible looks, not everyone can stand out on a night like this - for better or worse - so here are the few celebrities that went unnoticed, didn't hit nor miss, or that I'm still undecided on...

1/8

Amanda Seyfried in Armani Prive

Purple is absolutely Amanda's colour, as she looks captivating here, yet the bow just looks meh. This dress has been done at every event, in every colour.

2/8

Emma Stone in custom Louis Vuitton

This look is almost one of the best from the entire night, but there is something I can't quite put my finger on what the issue is. The colour slightly washes Emma out, the fit seems off around her hips and torso, finally that pattern is very close to looking like your grandmothers sofa.

3/8

Margot Robbie in Armani Prive

After having such a successful year, Margot is currently one of the most anticipated guests at any red carpet event. Although she has finally escaped her Chanel contract, it seems Margot is now stuck in a never-ending press cycle of pink. This look just did nothing for me, even though she looks beautiful.

4/8

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior

This black gown is elegant and timeless, but it doesn't have any excitement or intrigue, other than it's neckline/shoulders, which are really not doing anything for Jennifer. Undeniably though, she still looks gorgeous.

5/8

Florence Pugh in Valentino

Pink looks... Oh wait, that's Florence Pugh?! Once again in a sheer chiffon flowy dress that we've seen her in countless times, in any colour imaginable. It's not that bad, it's just painful to see again and again, with no improvements or modifications.

6/8

Timothee Chalamet in Celine

Timothee is now known as the man to watch on a red carpet, he likes to do something scandalous, something risque, but tonight we got a bland, ill-fitted suit.

7/8

Barry Keoghan in Louis Vuitton

This look is really confusing, the top half is fabulous, but those pants are just atrocious - the fit and the design are quite literally hurting my eyes. Stylist everywhere would be desperate to dress Barry right now, after the Saltburn success, so this feels like a huge let down.

8/8

Elizabeth Olsen in Vivienne Westwood

I can't tell if I like this or hate it. The lace is very on trend, and Elizabeth wasn't the only guest to walk the carpet in a bridal style tonight, but something about this look isn't working for me.

And now, let's take a look at some of the worst looks of the night. Some of these are just badly fitted or slightly unusual - not in an avant garde kind of way - and some of these shouldn't have even been made in the first place.

Worst dressed

1/13

Selena Gomez in Armani Prive

There is so much going on here that nothing is sticking. Did someone take a guillotine to the bottom half of her dress? Whose idea was is to cut off the flow of the look with a chunky black belt? Why do all the straps of the bodice make me feel claustrophobic?

2/13

Taylor Swift in Gucci

Did Taylor get her invites mixed up, and wear her Golden Globes dress to a Christmas party where the theme was come as your favourite bauble and vice versa? Who knows... All I know is this look did not make the whole place shimmer (in the right way).

3/13

Emily Blunt in custom Alexander McQueen

The proportions of this dress are juste hurting my eyes. It feels as if someone at McQueen was inspired by a tshirt dress and decided to layer it over a perfectly good chiffon skirt. Maybe it was meant to be a strapless playsuit??! From the straps (why have them if they are going to look like a rice noodle) to the clashing colours that wash Emily out completely, this look was horrific.

4/13

Helen Mirren in Dolce and Gabbana

Someone tell Helen Mirren you can't wear your duvet

set to an awards show.

5/13

Meryl Streep in custom Valentino

I am never a fan of a skirt suit, but a floor length skirt suit just isn't the one to change my mind. The fabrics are clashing, the fit is not complementing Meryl at all and that pussy bow blouse is just awful.

6/13

Oprah in custom Louis Vuitton (looks like a throw cushion)

You get a throw cushion, you get a throw cushion, you get a throw cushion...

7/13

Julia Garner in Gucci

If you're going to look like a disco ball, really lean into the disco ball aesthetic. I'm kidding, just don't. And what on earth are the shoulder straps. It looks like someone cut off the top of this dress and all that was left were these two pieces of fabric to cover her upper body.

8/13

Natasha Lyonne in Schiaparelli

And with that, the over-saturation of Schiaparelli on the red carpet has officially hit us. This look was just not made for Natasha, the colour and the shape, combined with the bold character of the dress are just way too much for someone that can't pull it off and we see that if you let the dress wear you, even Schiaparelli can be a flop.

9/13

Aria Mia Loberti in David Koma

Perhaps you should head back to Primark and return that dress, while you're at it, burn those shoes, and fire your hair stylist.

10/13

Bella Ramsey in Prada

There are many unique and beautiful ways to do androgynous fashion in 2024, this is not it. All the love I developed for Prada from Brie Larson's gown has left the building.

11/13

Charles Melton in Giorgio Armani

I really wanted Charles to show up and have our jaws dropped tonight - he definitely has the means - but the fit of this suit is just unforgiving.

12/13

Jo Koy in Tom Ford

A pathetic little suit for a pathetic little man.

13/13

Hari Nef in Alexandre Vauthier

This is just wrong. The dress looks cheap, the frills feel like a curtain that doesn't keep out any light and perhaps the dress didn't fit, leading her stylist to tie a cheap ribbon around her waist.

All in all, I'd say that this was a pretty successful red carpet. We finally got some beautiful moments that we've been deprived of for so long as well as some looks that I wish we'd never seen. Let's talk about some of the best dressed and worst dressed of the night.
